If you are wanting a well rounded physique, one of the most important things is to build shoulder muscles. The shoulder muscles are called the deltoids. They are the round shaped muscles above your biceps. This is the most commonly forgotten muscle to workout when people workout. They work out their chest and back but forget about the deltoids.
To get the most out of building your shoulder muscles is to work them out on days that you do not work on your chest and back. When you lift weights to target your chest muscles and back muscles, the deltoids are receiving a light workout. To get the best results, focus on the deltoids by themselves. You should also wait two days after you do chest and back workout to get the highest potential for muscle growth. To get top results workout your shoulders on the same day you are working on your legs.
Presses are the best way to build shoulder muscles. This will work the anterior deltoid (the front part of shoulder). Most gyms already have machines to help you with this. The machine allows you to sit and press straight up which is perfect workout for deltoids. Always do the whole motion. The presses are useless if you do not. You can also do presses by using dumbbells. Let the dumbbells drop all the way down and touch the back of your neck before pressing up.
Next you will want to focus on the lateral deltoid which is the part of the muscle that gives your shoulder the shape. Never use heavy weights that you will have to swing to lift them. You will need very light weights. To build the cap of your shoulder you will want to raise the weights up and out to your sides until it reaches shoulder level. You will also want to do this in front of your body and raise in front of you keeping arms straight and bringing to chest level and back down.
The final step is working your posterior deltoids which is the back of your shoulder. The best way to accomplish this is to sit on the weight bench with your knees to your chest. Keep weights in your hands with arms straight and lift backwards.
Always remember to rest your shoulder muscles for a couple days in between workouts to allow muscles time to grow.
